Glaucoma is a collective name for several different eye conditions all of which affect your eye’s optic nerve. It is important that glaucoma is diagnosed in the early stages, before symptoms become evident, so that you can receive complete treatment, and preserve your excellent eye health. Unfortunately, glaucoma cannot be cured, and treatment of glaucoma focuses on preventing additional vision damage. Glaucoma is an eye condition which is often inherited, and may not show up until later in life. When a patient has glaucoma, they will have increased intraocular pressure which can cause damage to the optic nerve. When this damage is allowed to go untreated, permanent vision loss can occur. As part of your glaucoma eye exam, your intraocular pressure will be tested. If it is found to be high, our eye doctor may provide you with additional, testing. During our dilated eye exam, our eye doctor can view your optic nerve which will take on a certain appearance if you have glaucoma. A tonometry test will check your eye pressure. If our doctor feels it is necessary, a visual field test will be done to figure out if you lost any peripheral vision. Glaucoma testing is quick and painless.
